Virat Kohli Impressive as Skipper, Needs to Improve Batting Technique: Gundappa Viswanath
Former India batsman Gundappa Viswanath praised Virat Kohli's captaincy skills but feels the Test captain needs to improve as a batsman ahead of the tour to Australia.

Virat Kohli may have been struggling with the bat of-late but he has found support from former India batsman Gundappa Viswanath. The Little Master, known for his touch and fineness, feels the star India batsman can bounce back after making few adjustments to his batting technique. (Virat Kohli's Stance, Balance Faulty: Sunil Gavaskar )
Viswanath feels Kohli has been error-prone, making the same mistakes over and over again. This could prove costly in Australia, he said.
"Virat needs to learn to stay at the wicket in Tests. He has strokes all around and sometimes he plays one too many. He gets out the same way too many times. He must avoid that," Viswanath told Hindustan Times.
Kohli has often been guilty of chasing wide deliveries. His feet wide-apart stance has also been criticised by Sunil Gavaskar during the recent Test series with South Africa. (Virat Kohli Named Board of Control for Cricket in India Cricketer of the Year )
"It requires major adjustment. But to start with, instead of playing towards cover and cover point he should play straight and to mid-off. And instead of following the ball, he should let it go," Viswanath added.
Regarded as India's best player in ODIs, Kohli struggled in the Carlton Tri-series in Australia last year. He could only manage 29 runs from four matches.
Kohli started the World Cup on a strong note smashing a match-winning century against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval. But since then his performance has been below par. In 2015, Kohli scored 623 runs from 20 games at an average of 36.35, which included two centuries and one half-century.
While Kohli might be struggling with the bat, Viswanath was impressed by his captaincy. (Virat Kohli's Aggressive Approach a Breath of Fresh Air, But Bigger Challenges Await Team India)
"He has the qualities needed for a good captain. He is giving chance for players to excel. If he feels strongly about something, he does it," said the 66-year-old.
"Virat believes in horses for courses and takes good decisions. If he wants to play five bowlers, he will. If he wants to play spinners on a wicket that suits them, he is not afraid to ignore seamers," Vishy added.
India will play five ODIs and three Twenty20 international in Australia starting from January 12. India will be led by MS Dhoni and Kohli will be free from the burden of captaincy. Will the runs flow?

The Australian Test cricket squad on Friday joined the McGrath Foundation to help raise awareness of the need for breast care nursing services in the country and announce the fundraising goal of $380,000 for the eighth Pink Test -- the third match between Steven Smith's men against the West Indies starting here on Sunday. ( Read More in Cricket)
McGrath Foundation co-founder and president Glenn McGrath presented the Australian team with their baggy pink caps for the traditional pre-Test team photo and announced the need for increased funding to address the national shortfall in breast care nurses, according to a Cricket Australia (CA) release.
"With 43 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer every day there is critical and continuing need for more McGrath Breast Care Nurses to support families through breast cancer," McGrath said.
"This year we've set our Pink Test fundraising goal at $380,000, which will fund one new McGrath Breast Care Nurse for three years."
Beginning January 3, the Pink Test has become an iconic event, in particular Day 3 of the Test that has come to be known as Jane McGrath Day. On that day the entire crowd turns pink to support the McGrath Foundation and raise funds to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities all over Australia.
Cricket Australia chief executive officer James Sutherland said: "We're incredibly proud to be supporting the McGrath Foundation, with the Pink Test in Sydney now truly one of the great occasions on the Australian sporting calendar."
"Every year we're amazed by the overwhelming support the Pink Test generates for the Foundation and its important work. From the two competing teams to the thousands of fans who bathe the SCG in pink, it demonstrates the positive difference sport can make to society," he said.
"Thanks to the cricket community, the Test has raised more than $5 million, helping the McGrath Foundation place 110 breast care nurses across Australia and demonstrating cricket's ability to galvanise public support behind an important cause," Sutherland added.
Research from the McGrath Foundation shows that in 2016 there will be a shortfall of 85 breast care nurses across the country and this figure will grow by 28 percent by 2020.

Mohammad Amir's international return may have been a contentious issue in Pakistan cricket, but Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi welcomed him with open arms, saying he is "happy" with the young pacer's comeback to the limited-overs squad. ( Mohammad Amir Named in Pakistan Squad For New Zealand Series)
Pakistan Cricket Board included Amir in the ODI and T20 squads for the away series against New Zealand, giving him a lifeline to make amends for his spot-fixing act in 2010.
"Happy to have Amir back in team," Afridi today wrote on his twitter handle. "He told me truth first time I asked him in England. He admitted his mistake we should back him now." (Mohammad Amir Promises Wickets And Love on Comeback Trail )

Amir's return has been a subject of debate in national cricket with teammates Mohammad Hafeez and ODI skipper Azhar Ali even threatening to leave the team if the tainted pacer was selected. Though Pakistan Cricket Board chief Shahryar Khan intervened in the matter and reasoned with players, the opinions still seem to be divided in the Pakistan camp.
Afridi said he respected Azhar and Hafeez's stance. "We suffered a lot due to spot fixing scandal and our image was tarnished everywhere," he tweeted.

Sydney: Stephen O'Keefe was named on Saturday in a two-prong spin attack in Australia's side for the third Test against the West Indies in Sydney.
O'Keefe replaces injured paceman Peter Siddle in the only change to the team that trounced the Windies by 177 runs in Melbourne to retain the Frank Worrell Trophy.( Hazlewood Ready for Sydney Test)
Siddle has not recovered from an ankle injury he sustained in the Melbourne Test and was not 100 percent fit for Sunday's final Test, skipper Steve Smith said.
"He (Siddle) felt it wasn't best for him to come into this Test match the way he is at the moment," Smith told reporters at the ground.
"He's a great team man and felt he would be letting the team down (if he played).
"We were probably going to go the two spinners option anyway."
Smith said Australia had gone with the twin spin option as he expected the Sydney Cricket Ground pitch to turn.
"The wicket looks dry so I think it'll take some spin," he said.
"Peter Siddle is still a little bit sore.
"He'll have a rest for a couple of weeks and hopefully get himself right for (February's tour of) New Zealand."
It will be the first time in a decade that Australia will play two specialist spin bowlers at home, after leg-spinners Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill bowled together against South Africa in Sydney in 2006.
O'Keefe will partner front-line spinner Nathan Lyon and the left-arm finger spinner said he was confident the pair could succeed bowling in tandem against the Caribbean tourists.
"I enjoy playing with Nathan, he is a humble, lovely guy who I admire a lot and fingers crossed we can get that opportunity again," O'Keefe said.
"There are a couple of situations we have bowled the majority of the overs and enjoyed going each side of the bat."
O'Keefe, 31, made one Test appearance against Pakistan in Dubai over a year ago, claiming four wickets in a 221-run loss.
He was named in Australia's Test squad to travel to Bangladesh in October last year before the tour was cancelled amid safety concerns.
O'Keefe has taken 17 wickets at an average of 25 in this season's domestic Sheffield Shield, and was included in the Test squad for the first-ever Adelaide day-night Test last month before being released.

Cape Town: South African captain Hashim Amla will be under pressure in the second Test against England, starting at Newlands on Saturday.( Poor Show vs India my Lowest Point: Amla )
Amla and South Africa have not produced a single convincing Test performance since defeating a weak West Indies team at the same venue in the 2015 New Year fixture.( England Crush South Africa by 241 Runs)
Their 241-run defeat in the first Test against England at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday was their fourth loss in seven matches, with the other three fixtures severely affected by rain and ending in draws. Three of the defeats were in India.
South Africa's batting has been dismal during this period, with only three totals over 200 in 10 completed innings and just one individual century - Dean Elgar's undefeated 118 at Kingsmead - and three half-centuries.
Amla himself has hit the longest batting slump of his international career, scoring 150 runs in 10 Test innings at an average of 15.00 with a highest score of 43. His form in one-day and Twenty20 internationals has been similarly poor with his most recent 19 innings in these formats yielding a single century - against New Zealand in August - and no fifties.
Amla took over the Test captaincy in 2014 and made a good start with series wins against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and West Indies, contributing heavily with the bat as well.
But his recent form and an early history of reluctance to lead - he gave up an early provincial captaincy in order to concentrate on his batting, as well as the vice-captaincy of the national side at one stage - have caused questions to be asked about his future as Test captain.

India vs Pakistan series will held in december....

The fate of the bilateral series between Pakistan
and India, to be played in Sri Lanka, now lies in
the hands of the governments of both countries.
Both the BCCI and PCB confirmed that they had
written to their governments asking for
clearance for the tour, which is likely to feature
five limited-overs games - three ODIs and two
T20s. This is the first official confirmation
offered by the BCCI about the decision taken to
play the bilateral series in Sri Lanka.
Anurag Thakur, the BCCI secretary, said he had
written to the Indian Foreign Ministry on
Tuesday. "I have written a letter to the Foreign
Ministry seeking clearance to play with Pakistan
in Sri Lanka," Thakur told PTI. "According to the
agreement of India and Pakistan, both teams
were supposed to play in the UAE or at any
other neutral venue if the conditions in Pakistan
were not suitable. It is up to Pakistan as to
where they want to play. After discussions with
the BCCI and PCB, both countries have decided
to play in Sri Lanka."
The decision to play the series in Sri Lanka was
taken at the meeting between BCCI president
Shashank Manohar and PCB chairman
Shaharyar Khan in Dubai on Sunday. The PCB,
though, did not mention Sri Lanka as the venue
in a media release issued today, saying the final
decision would be announced publicly by ECB
president Giles Clarke, who was present as a
facilitator during the Dubai meeting between the
two boards.
"There has been much speculative reportage on
the PCB-BCCI discussions in Dubai under the
facilitation of Mr Giles Clarke. The facts are as
follows: a) PCB has informed the government of
the talks in Dubai that were regarded as fruitful.
The PCB has not asked for an NOC from
government for it is the government's
prerogative to decide on the issue. b) Similarly,
BCCI is also seeking its government's views on
these matters. c) No request has been received
from BCCI regarding the sharing of revenues. d)
In due course, Mr Giles Clarke would brief the
media of developments," the release said.
Both sides have been tightlipped after the
meeting, divulging few specific details including
the possible dates for the series. However
officials who have been privy to details of the
Dubai meeting indicated they the series could be
played between December 15 and the first week
of January. India then travel to Australia to play
a limited-overs series, which begins on January
12.

Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara to team up for Cricket All Stars

Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, widely considered the two best batsmen of their generation, were drawn on the same team for the first edition of the Cricket All Stars on Thursday (November 5). The draw, conducted in Times Square New York, saw 27 players assigned randomly to the two teams Sachin's Blasters and Warne's Warriors for the three-match series.
Besides Lara, Tendulkar also drew former international teammates Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. Among those drawn in the Blasters were Muttiah Muralitharan, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath and Shaun Pollock. Meanwhile, Shane Warne ended up with former colleagues Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds while also drawing a dream bowling attack of Courtney Walsh, Wasim Akram and Allan Donald.
With 26 of the 27 players allotted to either side, the two captains were left vying for last man Shoaib Akhtar, who joined the Blasters after captain Tendulkar won a coin toss to break the deadlock.
"We're going to go out there and play as hard as we possibly can, and we're going to win. Simple as that," said Warne after the draw. Warne also said the response to the tournament from the US public "had been overwhelming" and if all goes well, it could become an annual event.
He batted aside suggestions that the rules of cricket were too complicated for Americans to follow."When you take two minutes to concentrate on it, it's actually very simple," he said. "We're trying to hit the stumps and they're trying to hit it out of the park. It's not that hard."
The ICC-sanctioned matches will be played on drop-in pitches at major baseball fields in New York, Houston and Los Angeles.

If AB de Villiers is Superman

In the world of superheroes, Superman and Batman are two of the greatest characters in the DC universe. Superman, an alien from planet Krypton, is an invincible being. His strength, speed, stamina, and endurance are unfathomable. On the other hand, Batman, a homo sapien like us, molded himself into a superbeing through years of dedicated training. A master of stealth, Batman has extraordinary intellect, reflexes and has mastered the art of deception. The Man of Steel, Superman, is in a league of his own; he is indestructible (unless you've got Kryptonite).
Born into one of the most ancient and advanced civilizations, Superman's incredible powers effectively make him a god. Among cricketers, the only player whose attributes come close to mimicking superhuman abilities is AB de Villiers. Like Superman, the South African One-Day International skipper is way ahead of his time. He continues to inspire and awe despite being the best in the business. The way a god can inspire devotion, his aura leaves the crowd spellbound, with chants of 'A-B-D, A-B-D' following his arrival at the crease. The way Superman thrashed his opponents, the opposition's bowling arsenal is rendered useless by de Villiers's 360-degree strokeplay.
De Villiers has scored 5,454 runs (20 hundreds) in his last 100 ODI innings at an average of 69.01.
De Villiers has smashed 58 sixes (in 20 matches) in 2015 - the most by a batsman in a calendar year. He broke Shahid Afridi's record of 48 sixes (37 matches) - one that stood for 13 years.
He has four ODI tons where he took less than 60 balls to reach the landmark - the most by a batsman in history.
His ton in Mumbai pushed his career strike rate beyond 100, making him only the 3rd player with 8,000+ ODI runs to achieve the feat.
When de Villiers bats, records tumble; nothing seems impossible. He has established his supremacy at the top of the batting chain by thwarting the sharpest of attacks with his blade, time and again. However, even the best can falter at times. So can Superman and so does de Villiers. But like Superman has Batman and the rest of the Justice League members to help him out, de Villiers too has a number of individuals who can bail the team out of trouble when he misfires.

Who is South Africa's Batman?

Like Batman saved Gotham time and again, du Plessis has rescued South Africa from the most trying circumstances.
With scores of 133*, 17, 60, 51 and 62, Faf du Plessis amassed 323 runs, averaging a little over 80 in the ODI series against India. Du Plessis had an outstanding series, but the limelight was taken away by de Villiers's three centuries. Yes, he didn't convert three of his fifties into a hundred, but the solidity he provided as a No.3 played a major role in South Africa's first ever bilateral ODI series win in India.
Like Batman saved Gotham time and again, du Plessis has rescued South Africa from the most trying of circumstances. Du Plessis, who announced himself to the world with a match-saving performance against Australia on Test debut, has now become South Africa's batting mainstay across all formats. Let's take a look at du Plessis's numbers and how they stack up against some of the best players from the current generation.

Peter Siddle left out of Brisbane Test

Peter Siddle was left out of Australia's playing 11 in favour of Josh Hazlewood for the first Test against New Zealand, set to begin on Thursday (November 5) at the Gabba in Brisbane. Siddle, who impressed with figures of 2-32 and 4-35 in Australia's innings victory in the dead rubber Ashes Test at the Oval, was named the12th man with the 24-year-old Hazlewood joining Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc in a three-prong pace attack.
Siddle's floundering Test career received a fresh lease of life when he replaced a weary Hazlewood for the final Ashes Test after being ignored for each of theprecedingfour games. His inclusion, and subsequent success, led to much debate in Australia's cricketing circles with the 30-year-old Victorian widely tipped to retain his place at the start of the Australian summer. But on the eve of the first Test, new Test skipper Steven Smith put his weight behind the younger Hazlewood, who had sparkled at the very venue last year with a fifer on debut against India.
Hazlewood, who was rested following the Ashes for the subsequent limited-overs series and the cancelled tour of Bangladesh, admitted to have been burnt out at the end of a gruelling first season in international cricket. "It was obviously my longest run in a row in first-class cricket, let alone Test cricket and I think physically it probably got the better of me toward the back end of the (Ashes) series and my bowling probably showed that," he told Cricket Australia earlier this week."

Shoaib Malik announces Test retirement

Shoaib Malik
Pakistan's top-order batsman and off-spinner, announced his Test retirement after the third day's play of the third Test against England in Sharjah on Tuesday (November 3). Revealing his decision in a press conference, Malik reckoned the time was right for him to move on.
Malik, who has played 35 Tests for Pakistan, made a comeback into the Test side after a gap of five years, replacing the injured Azhar Ali in the ongoing series against England in UAE. He celebrated his return with a career-best knock of 245 in the first Test in Abu Dhabi and career-best figures of 4 for 33 in the ongoing game in Sharjah - the second achievement coming on the day of his retirement announcement.
Malik hangs up his white flannels with 1898 runs - including three centuries - and 29 wickets. In an emotional press conference after the third day's play on Tuesday, Malik said,"We have some good youngsters and now is the time to retire. Family comes first. I want to focus on the 2019 World Cup."
